What鈥檚 coming in Cytopathology

The New Year will bring you January鈥檚 Cytopathology and we are delighted that the SCAN section in this issue will be an overview of the 91桃色 Code of Practice (CoP) from our President, Mrs Alison Cropper.

The article highlights the updated layout and guidance within the CoP, reflecting the recent聽major changes to cervical screening, most significantly, the move to primary HPV testing.

To keep you up to date with the forefront of diagnostic cytology, several of the original articles in聽this next issue focus on emerging technologies. The Editor鈥檚 choice for January is the paper by聽Eccher et al which examines the extent to which publications on validation of whole slide imaging聽(WSI) for diagnostic use in cytology comply with the College of American Pathologists validation聽guideline (for histopathology). They recommend that future validation studies should better adhere聽to the guideline to ensure that there is robust evidence to support WSI in diagnostic cytology.聽January鈥檚 original articles also include papers on cell block-based RNA next generation sequencing,聽utilising WhatsApp in off-site rapid cytology evaluation of EBUS-TBNA samples, and construction of聽an artificial neural network for thyroid cytology.

In their interesting and informative article, authors from Johns Hopkins University and Weill Cornell聽Medicine describe the clinico-radiological and cytopathological characteristics, and differential聽diagnoses of the rare 鈥渘on-GIST鈥 mesenchymal neoplasms encountered in their centres in the last聽20 years. And as usual, intriguing case reports and Enigma Portal cases are presented to widen our聽cytology knowledge.

These articles are available in Early View online and the聽online issue will be published soon.

Cytopathology continues to encourage the submission of good quality articles and would welcome聽submission of your research to the journal . Also, if you are interested in聽joining the team of peer reviewers, please email the Cytopathology office CYTedoffice@wiley.com
